Beauty with a Purpose

The President of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, coined the phrase 'Beauty With A Purpose' more than 25 years ago and since then more than $400 million USD have been raised in support of children's charities across the globe, bringing help and hope to hundreds of thousands in need.

Among the many recipients of this outstanding fund-generating activity has been the Nelson Mandela Trust, Canada’s Cops For Cancer, Variety Clubs International, Operation Hunger, and the SOS Children’s Villages which cares for orphaned and abandoned children in 132 countries. As recent as November 2009 120 Miss World nations came together for the Miss World Charity Dinner in aid of the Variety International Children’s Fund at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Apart from a fantastic evening of world class entertainment. The Miss World 2009 contestants were introduced on stage and the guests were amazed by the spectacular display of auction gifts brought in by this year’s Miss World finalists as they arrived. Under the banner of “Beauty with a Purpose” the contestants helped to raise over $450,000 for Variety International Children's Fund.

Today, Beauty with a Purpose is also the name of a special annual award programme that singles out and recognises the Miss World contestant who has shown, through charitable work, to have made a real difference to people in need in her homeland.

Charity work is integral to the Miss World ethos and part of the brief to contenders in each country is that they volunteer their time or fundraise for charity.

It is the enduring popularity of the Miss World pageant that has helped spread the word and encouraged young women to get involved as part of their bid for the title in activities that really can only make the world a better place.

Miss World Contestants Meet President Jacob Zuma

President Jacob Zuma met the 112 Miss World contestants today at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria to wish them well in their preparations for the Miss World Final at Gallagher Estate, Johannesburg on 12 December 2009.

Addressing the contestants, ahead of meeting each one of them individually, President Zuma remarked that despite the gloomy weather he extended a warm welcome and pointed out the valuable role they have to play: “The Miss World Contest brings nations of the world together and is an important platform for promoting unity and togetherness amongst all of us.

There are many challenges facing the world such as poverty, disease and conflicts. Our Miss World contestants and national queens can play an important role in raising awareness about these ills and promote action for peace, love, togetherness and prosperity.

This contest also promotes economic activity, especially tourism, amongst world nations and encourages people to people contact and cooperation.”

For the contestants the Presidential meeting was the highlight of their South African trip to date and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Tomorrow the Miss World Group will visit Soweto before flying off to Kwa Zulu Natal for three days to participate in the Miss Beach Beauty final.

Johannesburg is the host city for Miss World 2009.

Wat is Miss World?

Miss World, die voor het eerst in 1951 werd gehouden, is de eerste wereldwijde Miss verkiezing. De verkiezing werd georganiseerd door Eric Morley, de voorzitter van het Britse catering- en entertainmentbedrijf Mecca. Inmiddels worden er jaarlijks meer dan 100 internationale schoonheidswedstrijden gehouden. De bekendste zijn Miss Universe (1952), Miss International (1960) & Miss Earth (2001).

Het karakter van Miss World

Het karakter van de verkiezing veranderde sterk in de loop der jaren. Zo waren er in 1951 26 deelneemsters, waarvan 21 uit Engeland en slechts vijf uit de rest van de wereld (Zweden, Denemarken, Frankrijk, Verenigde Staten en Nederland). Pas vanaf 1952 werd de huidige formule in gebruik genomen waarbij elk land door slechts één miss vertegenwoordigd mag worden. De verkiezing groeide gestaag van elf deelnemende landen in 1952 tot maar liefst 107 deelnemende landen in 2004.

Veranderingen binnen de aard van de pageant

Ook veranderde de aard van de verkiezing. Werd er in 1951 nog naarstig gezocht naar 'het mooiste meisje in bikini'; anno 2006 zoekt de Miss World organisatie naar een 'United Nations goodwill ambassador die een sterk karakter, ambitieuze instelling, behoorlijke opleidingsgraad en representatief uiterlijk moet hebben'. Bikini's en badpakken zijn sedert 1999 verboden op het Miss World podium. Van 1951 tot 1989 werd de Miss World-verkiezing jaarlijks gehouden in de hoofdstad Londen van Engeland. Pas in 1989 werd voor het eerst uitgeweken naar het buitenland (Hongkong).

Dit in navolging van de Amerikaanse Miss Universe-organisatie, die al sinds 1972 de verkiezingen soms ook buiten de eigen landsgrenzen liet plaatsvinden. Na Hongkong (1989), werd de verkiezing georganiseerd in: de USA (1991), Zuid-Afrika (1992-1995, 2001), India (1996), Seychellen (1997, 1998), Nigeria (2002), China (2003-2005) & Polen (2006).

Het vorig jaar waren de missen in Zuid-Afrika en dit jaar is de verkiezing op 12 december eveneens in Zuid-Afrika. Wie zal Miss Rusland, die er toen met de titel vandoor ging, opvolgen? Suriname wordt er vertegenwoordigd door Miss Suriname 2009 Zoureena Rijger.-.
